NFL insider highlights why DC Vic Fangio will not be Eagles’ savior in 2024
Vic Fangio has almost four decades of coaching experience in the NFL. After last season’s late collapse, the Eagles hired him to steady the ship. However, an NFL insider predicts that this might not work out in the Philadelphia team’s favor.
The fans came to know about the trouble brewing inside the Philadelphia Eagles camp when HC Nick Sirianni changed the defensive coordinator despite having a winning record. DC Sean Desai was demoted, and Matt Patricia was given the job. Things faltered, as the Eagles lost six of their final seven games.
This offseason, Patricia was fired and replaced by former Miami Dolphins DC Vic Fangio. The veteran coach worked as a consultant for the Eagles in 2022. However, ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell doesn’t see the positives in the hiring.
“Should the Eagles be better on defense in 2024? Yes. Are these moves locks to work out? Absolutely not," wrote Barnwell. “Fangio was just let go after one year in Miami. With Dolphins players actively celebrating his departure on social media.”
Barnwell is correct that several of the Dolphins players rejoiced at Vic Fangio being fired from his job. The insider suggested that the defensive quality of the Eagles will improve this season under Fangio, but not by much. This would be further magnified with an aging or rookie defensive unit.
Why was Vic Fangio fired by the Dolphins?
Tyreek Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus represents several players under contract at the Dolphins. When Vic Fangio was let go earlier this year, after the Dolphins’ exit from the playoffs, Rosenhaus spilled the beans on the cause of his firing:
"There were quite a few players that didn’t necessarily get along with Fangio. It wasn’t a great relationship with many of the players.”
The Eagles are mending the relationship between the HC and star quarterback Jalen Hurts. Only time will tell whether Fangio’s recruitment will hurt this process further or build the roster’s strength.
The Eagles are set to start this season on Sept. 6 against the Green Bay Packers.
