NFL insider raises red flags over Deion Sanders to Cowboys rumors

Deion Sanders' stock has been on the rise for two years straight now and the Colorado Buffaloes have been better off because of all the media attention being showered on the team. The flip side of that dynamic is that when the big dogs come calling, will Colorado be able to hold on to their prized assets?

When the 2025 NFL Draft comes around, we're likely to see QB Shedeur Sanders and CB-WR Travis Hunter end up as top-10 picks, but the future of Deion Sanders has also been thrown into question amid rampant rumors that the Dallas Cowboys could approach their former star to take over if Mike McCarthy fails to make a legitimate playoff run this year.

However, not everyone is convinced that Jerry Jones will get along with Deion Sanders should the Cowboys choose to go down that road. ESPN insider Ed Werder raised a major question regarding the same in response to a fan's question over whether Jerry Jones would swoop for Shedeur Sanders in the draft if Dak Prescott were to leave, and then bring Deion Sanders in to coach his son.

"Lot of teams will want to draft Shedeur. Does Jerry [Jones] want a head coach who takes all of the attention?," Werder tweeeted.

Could the Cowboys realistically move for Deion Sanders to replace Mike McCarthy?

Look, there's a reason his nickname is 'Coach Prime.' Deion Sanders loves primetime football. By all accounts, he flourishes when media attention is on him. The better question is, if the Cowboys do choose to go down the Coach Prime route, will it succeed?

The Cowboys' coaching changes in recent years have been anything but glamorous. Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett and Mike McCarthy weren't exactly known for their swaggering style of football but were looked at as positive, sensible hires to establish a stable, if un-sexy style of football.

“I don’t have any desire or ambition to coach in the NFL,” Sanders told Sports Illustrated last year.

Why? Because, in Sanders' words, he has a problem with "men getting their checks and not doing their jobs," adding that he would be too tough on NFL players and that approach may not translate into sustained success.

His old-school attributes worked well enough at Jackson State, though. According to Boardroom, an HBCU spokesperson revealed that the Coach Prime effect directly led to JSU generating an estimated $185 million “in advertising value and exposure to the university.”

Ed Werder's thoughts on Deion Sanders coaching the Cowboys in the future could well turn out to be true. Hiring Sanders would give shades of the Jimmy Johnson hire, but the Cowboys will have to look elsewhere if they decide Mike McCarthy isn't the man to lead the charge.

And that's without considering the fact that Dallas probably won't have a high enough pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to bring Shedeur Sanders to Jerry World. A simple simulation on our NFL Playoff Predictor sees the Cowboys land the 22nd overall pick, with several QB-needy teams like the Raiders, Giants, and potentially the Saints ahead of them.
