Why can't the Raiders fire Josh McDaniels after horrible start?

Before the season began, the Las Vegas Raiders were considered to be one of the teams that could make a big leap in the 2022 season.

They acquired Davante Adams and Chandler Jones in free agency, re-signed Hunter Renfrow and Maxx Crosby and also hired Josh McDaniels as their head coach.

Through 10 weeks of the 2022 season, the Raiders sit at a lousy 2-7 record and are in last place in the AFC West.

The Raiders recently lost to the Indianapolis Colts, who had Jeff Saturday take over as interim head coach after firing Frank Reich and many think that McDaniels is on the hot seat after losing to Saturday, who had no prior NFL coaching experience.

According to reports, the Raiders aren't in a position to fire their coach due to being backed up financially.

Per NFL journalist Dov Kleiman, sports columnist and Around the Horn regular panelist Bill Plaschke said that the Raiders can't fire McDaniels because they don't have the money to fire him.

Kleiman Tweeted:

"The reason the #Raiders won't fire Josh McDaniels is financial - "They don't have the money to fire him. The team is "cash poor" and can't afford to fire McDaniels and then pay another coach. He'll be the coach this year and next year."

On January 11, 2009, the Denver Broncos made Josh McDaniels their head coach who signed a four-year, $8 million contract with the team.

He finished 8-8 with the team in his first season as head coach, placing second in the AFC West and just missing the playoffs. The following season, McDaniels would only last 12 games and was fired after going 3-9 and falling to the Kansas City Chiefs on December 5th, 2010.

The following season, he joined the St. Louis Rams as their offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach for a season. After his lone season with the Rams, McDaniels re-joined the New England Patriots and was their offensive coordinator & quarterback from 2012 to 2021.

The Las Vegas Raiders made Josh McDaniels their head coach on January 31, 2022. He signed a four-year contract with the team this off-season and will have to pay him for at least three more seasons even if he leaves. At the same time, if they were to fire McDaniels, they wouldn't be able to afford to hire a new coach while still paying his salary.

If the wins don't start to pile up for the Las Vegas Raiders, it will be interesting to see what they do with McDaniels.
