NFL legend Joe Namath goes off at referees as Bills vs Jets descends into controversy

NFL legend Joe Namath was frustrated with the referees in the Buffalo Bills 23-20 win over the New York Jets on Monday. The teams combined for 22 penalties and 204 yards.

It was frustrating to see flags thrown on nearly every play. On Tuesday, the former New York Jets player called out the refs on X, formerly Twitter

"You mean you can’t call him an MF’n SOB?!? Talk about thin skin…," Namath tweeted.

Namath's post was about the Jets defensive end Javon Kinlaw being penalized for improper conversation with an official. It was a call that isn't made often, making Namath frustrated with the penalty.

Namath played in the NFL for 13 seasons from 1965 until 1977. He played 12 seasons with the Jets, including leading New York to a Super Bowl in 1968.

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers rips refs

Joe Namath wasn't the only person to aim the refs. New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was also frustrated with the refs.

Rodgers also believes bad calls were made on both teams, including the roughing the passer call on Bills edge rusher AJ Epensa, which kept a Jets drive going.

"It seemed a little ridiculous," Rodgers said of the officiating, via ESPN. "Some of [the calls] seemed really bad, including the roughing the passer on me [by AJ Epenesa]. That's not roughing the passer. You might as well play Sarcastaball [a reference to the TV show 'South Park'] if we're going to call those things."
"And I thought the one on [Javon] Kinlaw wasn't roughing the passer, either."

The Jets fall to 2-4 on the season having lost three games consecutively. The loss was extra frustrating for Rodgers.

"It's frustrating," he said. "I'm here to win those games... I thought we were going to have a big night on offense. Again, this should have been a 30-plus point game on offense, and this shouldn't even be a conversation."

The Jets will return to the field on the road on Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
