NFL Rumors: Bryce Young's time with Panthers is "over" despite team's comments after Week 2 benching, claims insider
Earlier this week, the Carolina Panthers announced the benching of quarterback Bryce Young after his dismal display in the team's first two games of the campaign, handing over the reins to veteran Andy Dalton.
Following the announcement, head coach Dave Canales was asked during a press conference whether he believed the sophomore star could bounce back from this setback and reclaim the starting job. He responded:
"Absolutely... This is a developmentally-minded program. So the development didn't stop. Every rep he's out there, we're evaluating the whole thing. Having conversations and just continuing to push all of our guys, including Bryce, to take that next step. Every day is a growth possibility and opportunity. So we're fully committed to that."
While the rookie head coach suggested that their quarterback situation was fluid, NFL Insider Dianna Russini reported that it's the end of the road for Young in Carolina. In her report in the New York Times, she alluded that owner David Tepper had his say in the decision to bench the former first-overall pick and the franchise will likely move on from the quarterback.
"It’s over. No matter what Carolina says, rest assured: It’s over," She wrote.
Her report contradicts the Panthers' stance on the young star's future with the team.
Bryce Young trade: Will the Panthers part ways with the second-year QB?
During Canales' press conference last Wednesday, he was asked whether the team was looking to trade Young after benching him for Dalton. He said:
"That’s not something we’re really considering. We have a great situation with our quarterbacks right now with guys that have experience. We love where we’re at and we’re all hands on deck. We’re focused on playing the Raiders this week.”
While the Panthers have downplayed reports that the quarterback was available in trade talks, Russini claims there's no way back for the young star, suggesting they are posturing to get the best possible deal for the Alabama alumni.
Young is in his second season in the NFL and has played only 18 games. A change in scenery and a more patient coaching staff with a better offensive line and weapons could alter the course of his career.
For now, the sophomore star remains a Panther. However, things could change quickly and a team hunting for a new quarterback or a young player they can groom to be a signal caller could get on the phone and test Carolina's resolve with an offer for Young.
