NFL Rumors: Cowboys tipped to splash $289M on major QB move
A few years ago, Dak Prescott was at the center of contract negotiations as the Dallas Cowboys delayed his contract extension for a long time. He signed a four-year, $160 million in 2021, which had him locked up until the 2024 season.
So could he be at the table to negotiate a new extension soon? It looks increasingly likely.
With two years remaining on his contract, Prescott is set to receive a massive new deal in the upcoming seasons, whether that is in 2023 or 2024. The Dallas Cowboys will never let go of a quarterback of his quality, and there's no doubt he's going to be their franchise quarterback for a long time.
So what could be the numbers for his next contract?
What will be the salary for Dak Prescott's new contract with the Dallas Cowboys?
A projection from The Cowboys Wire puts the Cowboys quarterback in a deal that could earn him $289 million over six years.
The projected deal would be a contract extension after the 2023 season with five years and $255 million in total value. With the quarterback set to earn $34 million in cash for the 2024 season, this would add to a major deal.
There will also be two void years (2030, 2031) so the team can prorate his signing bonus for a longer period. There is no speculation about what the guaranteed money would be in this deal, but the $48.1 million average per year would be a fair value based on the other contracts we've seen in the league.
A possible game-changer would be the new deal for Jalen Hurts, one that the Philadelphia Eagles are hoping to get done this offseason. Depending on Hurts' average per year, Prescott's deal could balloon to over $300 million in total over six years.
As much as some fans like to bash Dak Prescott due to his high number of interceptions, the truth is that he's one of the best quarterbacks in the league and there's no way Dallas is getting rid of him. A new extension is unlikely in 2023, but it's certainly coming in 2024.
