NFL rumors: Deshaun Watson's $230,000,000 paycheck in jeopardy as Browns altered contract clause

Deshaun Watson might be looking at a serious pay cut if he is suspended again. Currently looking at a sexual assault lawsuit, the Cleveland Browns have reportedly withdrawn an important clause from Watson's contract.

As per FOX's Jay Glazer, the clause removal no longer protects Watson from a future suspension with the team. This means that if Watson is suspended again, he will not receive his guaranteed money.

As per Glazer, the team changed the clause 'quietly.' The clause was in place during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, and would protect his guaranteed money if he were to be suspended then.

"The original contract was fully guaranteed for Deshaun Watson. Even if he got suspended in the 2022, 2023 season, he would not lose any guarantees. Very quietly in August, they restructured his deal. They did not put the same protections in.
"If he has a suspension moving forward, there could be a chance they could go back and get some of those guarantees," Glazer said.

With the Browns since 2022, Watson has a five-year, $230 million contract with the team. As per Spotract, $230 million of the money is guaranteed, while $44,965,000 is a signing bonus.

It makes his average salary $46 million.
