NFL Rumors: Insider believes major QB departure could take place in Green Bay next year

Could quarterback Jordan Love want out of Green Bay after the 2022 NFL season? Green Bay Packers insider Jason Wilde appeared on Homer & Tony podcast this week. He said that after a recent conversation with the third-year quarterback, he believes that he may ask the team to trade him if Aaron Rodgers stays for the 2023 NFL season.

Wilde said that although Love didn't actually say that he would want that, he insinuated that he is ready for an opportunity. And, clearly, that situation doesn't look to be in favor of the Green Bay Packers.

“I had a really great conversation with Jordan Love on Friday afternoon. I think he very clearly, even though he wouldn’t flat-out say it, he does not want to sit for another year. So, if we get to year four, and Rodgers does come back, I am fairly confident that he will seek a trade.”

Love was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft as Rodgers' eventual successor. It's clear that Rodgers isn't ready to call it a career yet.

He signed a contract extension after last season and is prepared to play past the age of 40. That decision could lead to Love deciding that he wants to leave and not wait any longer for Rodgers.

The Green Bay Packers find themselves in an impossible situation

In 2020, the Green Bay Packers moved up in the first round to draft quarterback Jordan Love out of Utah State. Now in his third NFL season, he has played in just six games, starting in just one game in 2021 when Aaron Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19.

Jordan Love will request trade in 2023, Packers insider believes @NBCSBears trib.al/csB0oVy

He just has a 60 percent completion rate and has thrown for 597 yards and three touchdowns. In early May 2023, the Packers will have to decide on whether they will pick up Love's fifth-year option for the 2024 NFL season.

If the team decides to do just that, they would have to pay him $20 million. With the tight salary cap space that the Packers already have, adding another $20 million to that would be nearly impossible.

So, do they trade Love, as he is rumored to have asked for? Or, do they somehow part ways with Aaron Rodgers? If the Packers want to trade Love in the future, they should give him, at least, another opportunity at the start. The Packers are currently 5-8 on the season and a playoff spot is nearly impossible.

Thinking about the future is what the organization should be thinking about at this point.
