NFL Rumors: Insider Peter King floats insane trade involving Derek Carr and Aaron Rodgers
Neither Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders nor Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers have had the success they envisioned in recent times. Green Bay were the heavy favorites to win the NFC North this season, but they currently trail the Minnesota Vikings by four games.
Las Vegas went to the playoffs last season before hiring Josh McDaniels and trading for superstar Davante Adams. They're 3-7 and have almost no hope of a playoff spot.
Trading away Adams has had a serious negative effect on the Packers as their offense has struggled all year. NFL Insider Peter King has a wild trade suggestion that just might fix some of these teams' issues.
Here's what King wrote on Pro Football Talk:
“I think it might not be altogether nonsensical to consider trading Rodgers to Las Vegas for Derek Carr and a third-round pick. Might being the most important word there. Miles to go before you reach a decision like that, but it has crossed my mind.”
It's very possible that both teams are in search of a new quarterback next season. Rodgers has wanted out of Green Bay before and that was when they were perennial playoff contenders.
Las Vegas may have reached their ceiling with Carr, and that was a 9-7 playoff appearance and first-round exit. Trading the two would certainly work in Las Vegas' favor more, so they might have to send a few draft picks, but it's not something that can be counted out.
Will Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr be playing for different franchises next season?
These two quarterbacks aren't that likely to be flipped for each other. That kind of trade doesn't happen all that often and it would be a bit one-sided.
However, there is a strong chance that neither will be on their current team. The Indianapolis Colts have struggled to find a quarterback, bringing in Philip Rivers and then trading for Carson Wentz and then Matt Ryan. None of it has worked, but they might just try again with Rodgers.
The Raiders are going to have a good draft pick in a deep quarterback class. It may very well be in their best interest to ship Carr elsewhere (perhaps New Orleans) and draft a top rookie quarterback in his stead.
