NFL Rumors: Jalen Hurts set to demand contract extension upwards of $45 million per season

The Philadelphia Eagles are in a world of hurt right now. After losing the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles lost offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who played an important role in the development of quarterback Jalen Hurts, to the Indianapolis Colts.

Along with several free agents, the Eagles are now looking at the prospect of having to pay Hurts. With the quarterback up for a contract extension, what will that mean for the rest of the roster?

Well, that will largely be determined by how much Hurts wants and what the Eagles are willing to give him. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, a potential "starting point" for conversations is $45 million a season for the Eagles to lock their star quarterback in for the foreseeable future.

Update: #Eagles QB Jalen Hurts's next contract will be "North of $45 million."

And that just might be the starting point, according to @AdamSchefter https://t.co/3LHvpsPZ1v

Now, some might see this as Hurts being greedy, but the fact is, that's roughly the going rate for quarterbacks in the league. After a superb season in which he lost just two games as a starter (one being the Super Bowl), Hurts' value has shot through the roof.

The harsh reality is that Philadelphia might have to shell out whatever Jalen Hurts wants. After seeing so many teams struggle due to quarterback issues, the Eagles will likely have to stump up that kind of money.

Of course, there is another option. What if the quarterback doesn't want that kind of money? What if he is happy to take a "team-friendly" deal in order to allow the Eagles front office to get more pieces around him and potentially make another run at the Super Bowl?

Is that really an option? Well, it was for Patrick Mahomes and it could be for the 24-year-old, but only time will tell once the negotiations start.
