NFL Rumors: Jimmy Garoppolo seeking over $25 million per year in free-agency
Jimmy Garoppolo has been through the ringer over the last couple of years in dealing with Trey Lance. Now, he wants to be compensated for it. NFL insider Albert Breer has claimed that the quarterback is asking for $25 million per year via Dov Kleiman on Twitter.
After two years of sitting on the bubble as a bridge quarterback, Garoppalo is looking for guaranteed starting money. While it is a far cry from some of the contracts that have been inked in the last year, $25 million is still a sizable chunk of change that falls squarely in the middle of the payment spectrum.
Where will Jimmy Garoppolo play in 2023?
Most top-tier quarterbacks are making money in the $40-50 million range, while backups and young quarterbacks hover below $10 million per season.
NFL fans speculate about Jimmy Garoppolo's options in free agency
At face value, finances aside, the quarterback has a few spots that could work well. Assuming that Aaron Rodgers-Jets' move isn't made, the former 49ers QB would be a decent consolation prize for many. Additionally, landing with former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would put the offense one step ahead of where it would be with most of the other free agent quarterbacks.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could also be a decent destination if the team is quietly less confident in Kyle Trask than they're letting on. If the Atlanta Falcons believe they've seen enough out of Desmond Ridder and want someone with more experience to take over, that could be a destination as well.
Jimmy Garoppolo has 2.06 passing touchdowns per intercepted pass since 2019. He's also played in a Super Bowl. Additionally, his completion percentage (68.2) has been as solid as any player in the league.
Many believe that if Garopollo can land in the right situation, the team could go far, assuming he can stay healthy.
