NFL Trade Rumors: Colts looking to cut ties with experienced Pro Bowler
The Indianapolis Colts drafted center Ryan Kelly in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft with the 18th overall pick. On May 4, 2016, Kelly inked a four-year $10.45 million rookie contract that included a signing bonus of $5.8 million.
On April 27, 2019, the Colts picked up Kelly's fifth-year option for the 2020 season. He then inked a big contract extension on September 4, 2020, signing a four-year $50 million extension, becoming the highest-paid center in the NFL. He's currently the sixth-highest-paid center in the NFL this season.
Two years into his contract, the team is looking to get rid of the three-time Pro Bowler. Via ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, Kelly is available for trade. If the team is unable to trade him, then a release is possible.
He's made three straight Pro Bowls from 2019 to 2021 and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2020. He has played and started in 97 career games.
The franchise currently has about $12 million in cap space and is looking to clear up more space by getting rid of Kelly.
Kelly has a cap hit of $12.3 million this season and the outfit would save $7.8 million in cap moving on from him.
Who will be the Indianapolis Colts quarterback next season?
The Indianapolis Colts will have a new leader at quarterback next season.
Last year, they shuffled through Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, and Nick Foles. They finished the season 4-12-1 with these guys playing quarterback.
Owner Jim Irsay has publicly said that he's interested in Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.
The team has the fourth-overall pick in the draft and has two teams in front of them (Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans) that will most likely select a quarterback.
The franchise will either select one at pick number four or try to trade up by getting their number one or two options at quarterback in the draft.
