NFL Trade Rumors: Kansas City Chiefs pegged by insider as key landing spot for Michael Thomas
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a Super Bowl win in a season that many predicted to be a rebuilding one. Despite losing Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, the Chiefs' offense didn't miss a beat and dominated throughout the season.
However, as we approach free agency, the Chiefs could lose two key receivers in the form of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman. As a result, the franchise will be continuously linked with many high-profile receivers on the market throughout the offseason.
Mike Jones of the Athletic believes that the Chiefs could become an ideal landing spot for New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas. He stated:
"As an anticipated cap cut, Thomas would hit free agency after a few injury-plagued seasons, and there are few destinations more attractive than Kansas City, where Patrick Mahomes could use another playmaker to keep this dynasty train rolling."
Michael Thomas has dealt with numerous injuries over the past few seasons due to which his market value has gone tremendously down. Although he could be a great fit for the Kansas City Chiefs, it is highly unlikely that the Super Bowl champions will make a move for him.
After losing Tyreek Hill last season, the Chiefs focused on acquiring numerous quality receivers rather than a single notable name. Their current system is designed for Patrick Mahomes to spread the ball, and signing an aging wide receiver would contradict Brett Veach's philosophy.
On top of that, it seems like Michael Thomas is excited to pair up with Derek Carr, and many believe he will be playing for the Saints next season.
Kansas City Chiefs already have many weapons for Patrick Mahomes next season
Even if the Kansas City Chiefs are unable to bring back Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency, they would still have a pretty good surrounding cast for Patrick Mahomes.
Travis Kelce, Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are all under contract for next season and will be reliable targets for the Super Bowl MVP.
In addition, the Chiefs will welcome Clemson's Justyn Ross and former Cincinnati Bengals receiver John Ross next season, both of whom might become deadly targets for Mahomes. Although the Chiefs are eager to re-sign Smith-Schuster, it wouldn't be a surprise if they also draft a receiver in the 2023 NFL Draft.
