NFL Trade Rumors: League insider floats blockbuster solution for Dolphins with Tua Tagovailoa on Injured Reserve

Following a concussion against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve. He will be out for at least three more weeks, if not longer, with no timetable for his return.

This past Sunday, the Dolphins played their first full game without Tua Tagovailoa and suffered a 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. In the loss, backup quarterback Skylar Thompson completed 13-of-19 passes for 107 yards.

The Dolphins added quarterback Tyler Huntley this past week off the Ravens' practice squad. Being thin at the quarterback position with many question marks, ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter suggested on the Pat McAfee Show that the Dolphins make an offer to three separate AFC teams for a quarterback.

Schefter said:

“They still have to address the quarterback position before the season slips away. In my mind, they have to be making calls. There are three quarterbacks that, in my mind, make sense. I’m not telling you that they have, or will, reach out to any of these quarterbacks.
“I’d call Denver and I’d say what would you want for Zach Wilson. I would call Pittsburgh and I would say what would you want for Russell Wilson. I would call Cleveland and ask what would you want for Dorian Thompson-Robinson.”

Both Huntley and Thompson are unproven backups. Huntley has started nine games and has a 3-6 record. He has thrown for eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, and has 509 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Thompson has a 1-3 career record including the playoffs and has completed under 60 percent of his passes with just one touchdown and three interceptions.

The Miami Dolphins could add another quarterback to their roster with Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve. There are many options the Dolphins possibly have.

Perhaps the Dolphins could acquire a former Alabama quarterback such as Jacksonville Jaguars backup, Mac Jones, or Carolina Panthers backup, Bryce Young. Both were in the same system as Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama and have chemistry being Alabama alumnus.

Russell Wilson is also a possible option as Justin Fields has helped lead the Steelers to a 3-0 start. Wilson was signed for a veteran's minimum, and Pittsburgh could get some draft capital in return for trading him.

Wilson is the most experienced quarterback and has a ton of postseason success. He could be the best option to quickly adapt to their system.
