Patrick Mahomes breaks Drew Brees' all-time NFL record for most yards in a season
Patrick Mahomes can't stop breaking records.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback (5,570) broke Drew Brees' record (5,562 in the 2011 season) for most total yards (passing, rushing, receiving) in a single season, adding to his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
Mahomes entered the final week of the season with 5,048 passing yards, making him close to matching Brees' numbers. However, his ability to scramble and get rushing yards (329 yards, 4 touchdowns) also played a part in his new record - to note, he recorded one reception for six yards as well.
This is another one for the long list of records amassed by Mahomes over his six-year career. He's already one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game and his number of accolades will only grow every season.
While a 17-game season certainly helped his case, the quarterback has been excellent for such a long time that he will probably break this record anyway. The next record that he might be looking to break is for most passing yards in a single season, set by Peyton Manning in 2013 with 5,477 passing yards for the Denver Broncos.

Patrick Mahomes career: how good is the Chiefs' quarterback?
The rise of Patrick Mahomes will be forever remembered by NFL fans.
He was a first-round pick out of Texas Tech whom the Chiefs traded up to draft. Since becoming a starter in 2018, he has been voted into every Pro Bowl, has been nominated into the All-Pro multiple times, and made the AFC Championship Game every season, winning a Super Bowl in 2019.
His talent combines with the wisdom of Andy Reid as an offensive mentor. Together, they created a nearly impossible duo to stop. Even with Tyreek Hill traded in 2022, the Chiefs' offense still rolls over each and every opponent they face.
We'll only have a complete notion of his greatness once he retires from the league. For now, we can appreciate all the fun things he does week in and week out.
