Patrick Mahomes goes through full range of emotions as controversy erupts over Virginia Tech's overturned TD vs. Miami
On Friday, the Miami Hurricanes beat the Virginia Tech Hokies 38-34 in a wild back-and-forth game at Hard Rock Stadium, which had Patrick Mahomes at the edge of his seat right until the final play of the contest.
The high-scoring encounter finished on a controversial call that had social media buzzing.
In the game's final play, the Hokies needed a touchdown to win and had seemingly scored one, as the referees ruled that wide receiver Da'Quon Felton had caught quarterback Kyrone Drones' Hail Mary attempt from the 40-yard line.
It was the storybook finish for the unranked team and Mahomes expressed his astonishment on X about the game's final play, writing:
"Lolol no idea what happened in this game"
Despite protests from the Hurricanes' defensive backs, the call stood. However, since it was a scoring play, it was reviewed automatically in the booth and replays suggested that Felton did not have possession of the ball at any point.
After nearly six minutes, the booth overturned the call and the Hurricanes escaped with a win, prompting another reaction from Mahomes:
The decision to overturn the touchdown caused an uproar on social media but the Kansas City Chiefs superstar veered away from adding to the discourse.
Virginia Tech's overturned TD controversy: Calais Campbell agrees with decision
Some fans argued that there was no clear evidence that Felton never had control of the football when his feet hit the floor. As per the rule, the decision should have stood and the Hokies should've been awarded the touchdown and the win.
However, Miami Dolphins star and University of Miami alum Calais Campbell believes the booth made the right decision and called out the on-field referees for ruling it a touchdown:
"The call on the field should’ve been incomplete to start with! Good thing the replay had enough there to overturn it! Ball moving and a guy out of bounds touched it. Dead ball in that moment. Huge win for my Canes"
The controversial win saw Miami improve to 5-0 and preserve their perfect start to the season.
