Patrick Mahomes has high expectations from Chiefs rookie Xavier Worthy after impressive debut

Following a breakout rookie debut by Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy, quarterback Patrick Mahomes thinks he can build off of his big Week 1 for a big rookie season. Worthy scored two touchdowns in the Chiefs' 27-20 victory against the Ravens on the opening night of the 2024 NFL season.

On Worthy's first NFL touch, he took a 21-yard reverse to the house for a touchdown. Worthy then scored his second touchdown of the night on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to give the Chiefs a 10-point lead over the Ravens with 10:25 left in the game.

During Wednesday's press conference, Mahomes spoke highly of the rookie wideout. He thinks his Week 1 performance can build his confidence for the rest of the season after having a big game against one of the best defenses in the league the Ravens.

"I think it’s just going to be a spark," Mahomes said. "It shows what he can do. Obviously, it showed his speed. It showed how he’s able to run routes and find open spaces. It just kind of gives him that confidence. I think he already had it anyways, but to show that he can do it on Sundays or whatever day of the week that we’re playing. It’s just kind of a start for him."
“We want him to keep building. We want to get him more and more involved in the offense, but a great start.”

The Chiefs moved up a few spots in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft with the Buffalo Bills to select Worthy. They were high on him, and he showed why they traded up for him in the first game.

Xavier Worthy has a 24-hour rule following a great football game. After his standout performance, Worthy said:

“Oh, man, it’s been cool just to have that do what I did on Thursday, but I have this 24-hour rule for you to do it. You live it out, and then you forget about it. It’s on to the next. So, I’m on to the next.”

While Worthy is excited about his rookie debut, he understands he can't live on the high for too long. This week's challenge is the Cincinnati Bengals who got upset by the New England Patriots in Week 1.

The Bengals can even be seen as a kryptonite to Mahomes and the Chiefs as Burrow has a 3-1 head-to-head record against the Mahomes-led Chiefs. Worthy hopes to add some spark to the new rivalry.
