Patriots reporter compares Drake Maye to 'the ghost of Mac Jones' in 2024 training camp
The Drake Maye-era in New England is set to begin this season. After the team made many changes in the offseason, one of the important decisions it made was selecting Maye with the third-overall pick in this year's draft.
During minicamp, there was a lot of chatter that Maye was lighting it up, and looked good on the field. The same can't be said about Maye in the Pats' first training camp practice.
According to NBC Sports Boston host Michael Holley, Jones looked bad in the team's first fully-paded practice on Monday. Maye was so bad, according to Holley, that he compared him to Mac Jones' last season when he played the Dallas Cowboys
Holley said:
“I watched Drake Maye in college. I loved him in college. He was a tremendous college player. At times they compared him to Justin Herbert. I could see that. People compared him to Josh Allen. I could see that.
"Today, you know who I saw? I saw the ghost of Mac Jones. Not just Mac Jones facing off against Tom Brady as a rookie. We’re talking about Mac Jones in Dallas in that awful beatdown they took at Dallas last year. He was terrible in every sense of the word. He couldn’t get anything right.”
To put the words into perspective, Jones completed 12-of-21 passes for 150 yards and two interceptions in the Pats' 38-3 loss to the Cowboys. He was benched in the game for backup quarterback, Bailey Zappe.
According to yahoo.com, Maye completed two of his six attempts, including one interception in 7-on-7's. Maye completed 1-for-4 in 11-on-11 periods and was sacked on a play. In total, he went 3-for-10 including a sack and an interception. Not ideal.
New England Patriots signed Jacoby Brissett this offseason as insurance to Drake Maye
The New England Patriots selected Jacoby Brissett in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. They traded him the following season to the Indianapolis Colts where he spent the next four seasons. After spending some time with Miami, Cleveland and Washington, the Patriots brought Brissett back home by signing him to a one-year deal this offseason.
The Patriots got rid of both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe this offseason and replaced them with Brissett and Drake Maye.
Brisset completed 4-for-6 in 7-on-7 work in practice on Monday. In 11-on-11s, he was nearly perfect going 8-for-9, with an interception that came on a dropped pass from Ja'Lynn Polk. In total, he went 12-for-15.
Perhaps the Patriots could look to begin the season with Brissett if they don't think Drake Maye is ready to start in Week 1.
