Patriots rookie Ja'Lynn Polk sets the record straight on viral Iraq War tweet
Ja'Lynn Polk was in the news recently for a quote appropriated to him that referenced the Iraq War. The rookie, instead of making headlines for his performances in training camp, was the target of headlines for reportedly saying,
“I heard the fans say that the Patriots don’t have any weapons. Well, this isn’t Iraq buddy, when the other teams comes looking for trouble they will find weapons of mass destruction here”
The reference was how there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction found in Iraq, which was the pretext for the war, but that was unlike what the situation was in New England with offensive weapons like him present on the roster. The quote was posted by X account @itsbostoncream.
People believed that it was a genuine thing that the rookie wide receiver had said and he had to come out to clarify that this was not the case. He wrote, adding a facepalm emoji at the end,
"I did not say this"
That this needed to be clarified was objectively hilarious and shows the problems associated with a system where mainstream media is not trusted and internet platforms without editorial guidelines are driving the news cycle. Even the original poster of the parody tweet added,
"I’m sorry Mr. Polk. What was meant to be an obvious fake quote seemingly got a little too much attention... Guys, do not listen to a donut on Twitter... Go Pats."
Iraq War tweeter promises to buy Ja'Lynn Polk's jersey
As the reference handle of the person who made up the tweet suggests, he is a Patriots fan from Boston. And the whole shenanigan was probably just to praise Ja'Lynn Polk as a serious weapon for New England going into the 2024 season. The wide receiver will need to be at the top of his game for rookie quarterback Drake Maye to compete in a tough AFC East division.
But because it went awry and the player had to weigh in on social media, X user @itsbostoncream has now promised to buy a Ja'Lynn Polk jersey. He wrote,
"This goes without saying, I have to buy a Polk jersey now."
If Ja'Lynn Polk can have a career as good as he is being hyped up to be, that would be a solid investment for any Patriots fan. New England will be hoping the rookie can indeed destroy some defenses when he takes to the field in the 2024 season.
