"Put this man in a nursing home" - NFL fans roast Jerry Jones as Cowboys GM chokes up at press conference

On Monday, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys unveiled Brian Schottenheimer as the franchise's new head coach. The team had a rather unconventional hiring process. They spent a week after their final regular season negotiating a deal with Mike McCarthy to retain his service before announcing they were parting ways with the veteran coach.

They were linked with Colorado Buffaloes head coach and Cowboys icon Deion Sanders for a while and did not interview any top candidates. In the end, they decided to promote offensive coordinator Schottenheimer to head coach.

Jerry Jones was asked about the Cowboys' unorthodox coaching hunt and their decision to hand over the reins to Schottenheimer, who has been a coach for 28 years but was never touted as a candidate to lead a franchise.

The 82-year-old choked up and fought back tears before defending his ability to identify top head coaching candidates:

“I have a good background in the makeup of what a coach is. To think that you could make a decision in an interview and not have talked if you didn’t and hadn’t ever communicated or had a visit. I wouldn’t dare have had an interview unless I talked to many, many people.”

Fans on social media, already unimpressed with the Cowboys' decision to hire Schottenheimer, did not buy Jones' response and mocked him for tearing up:

Meanwhile, some fans roasted Jerry Jones on the fact that none of the coaches he has hired have led the team to a Super Bowl in over 30 years:

"he's still trying to win best actor. he hasn't found one in 30 years he's been striking out...fired Jimmy Johnson lol," - Claimed @Keith_McPherson
"Sooooo..... What was Jason Garrett's makeup exactly? Dave Campo? Other than being super great a*s kissers, what qualities does Jerry look for in a head coach?" - Asked @ellotato
"Jerry has hired five prior head coaches without any NFL head coaching experience... The first two had extremely successful college HC records before he hired. The other three never had a pro HC job after Dallas." - Noted @amnigoo

Jerry Jones makes bizarre comment about Cowboys fans' feelings

Jerry Jones is aware that Cowboys fans were too pleased with the team hiring Brian Schottenheimer as its new head coach. In a chat with reporters after the press conference, he was asked how the fans' reaction to his decision to promote the offensive coordinator made him feel. He responded:

"There's a very low percentage of this that is smiles and glory holes. Very low percentage."

The Cowboys were hoping to have a strong start to the offseason after a dismal 2024 campaign. However, it has been underwhelming, to say the least.
