Raiders HC Antonio Pierce makes feelings clear over OC Luke Getsy's dismissal
After the Las Vegas Raiders' 41-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9, the team decided to fire offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Getsy joined the Raiders' coaching staff this season under Antonio Pierce after serving as Chicago's offensive coordinator from 2022-2023.
Following the team's decision, Pierce addressed the media on Monday. He said that firing Getsy was his decision and that the team has yet to decide on who the new play-caller will be. He added that the team hasn't named a starting quarterback moving forward.
"#Raiders HC Antonio Pierce said Monday that he hasn't decided on an offensive play caller moving forward after firing OC Luke Getsy Sunday. He also wouldn't name a starting QB moving forward. He said the decision to part ways with Getsy was "100% my decision." -Tashan Reed on X.
The firing of Getsy should come as no surprise. Las Vegas' offense has struggled and underperformed this season. The Raiders rank 26th in points per game (18.7), 29th in total yards (280.2) and last in rushing yards per game (76.9).
Las Vegas has shuffled QBs as they benched Gardner Minshew for Aidan O'Connell. Minshew then returned as the team's starter after O'Connell fractured his thumb in his second start of the season.
In Sunday's loss, Minshew was benched for newly-acquired QB, Desmond Ridder.
So not only do the Raiders have an offensive coordinator issue, but they also don't have a clear starting quarterback for the rest of the season.
Will Antonio Pierce's Las Vegas Raiders target a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft?
If the 2024 NFL season were to end today, the Las Vegas Raiders would hold the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
After firing their offensive coordinator, as well as offensive line coach James Cregg and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, and not having a franchise QB, it seems like the Raiders are set up to draft one of the top QBs in next year's draft class.
The Raiders have made it known before the firing of their coaches on Sunday night that they were rebuilding. That could also be why they traded Davante Adams to the New York Jets on Oct. 15.
If the Raiders continue to struggle and wind up with a top 10 pick in next year's draft, expect them to target a top QB prospect. Some of the big names are Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward, Quinn Ewers, Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe.
