Raiders HC reveals what will determine the starting QB battle between Minshew and O'Connell
The Las Vegas Raiders currently have a tough quarterback competition in training camp. NFL journeyman Gardner Minshew, who signed this offseason, is competing with 2023 fourth-round draft pick Aidan O'Connell.
Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce was asked about the quarterback competition and revealed what factors he considers in the decision-making process. Pierce said the first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings would be the first assessment. Per Jesse Merrick, football analyst on X (formerly known as Twitter):
"This preseason game is going to be very telling," said Pierce
Las Vegas released their first depth chart of the preseason this week and both Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew were listed at first string. The depth chart didn't give any clue as to which quarterback is the front runner at this point.
It's unclear whether Minshew or O'Connell will start against the Vikings on Saturday afternoon. Both quarterbacks will receive one quarter of playing time on the field, which should give the coaching team a better look at each player.
Raiders HC Antonio Pierce gives insight to what he's looking for in a starting QB
Antonio Pierce is heading into his first full season as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. One of his first major decisions is deciding who will be his starting quarterback. Las Vegas drafted Aidan O'Connell out of Purdue in 2023 and signed Gardner Minshew this offseason as a free agent, after he spent time with the Colts in 2023.
Pierce spoke to reporters on Wednesday about what he expects to see from both his quarterbacks. He said that game management, situational football and taking care of the football are top on the list, as reported by Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein.
"I want to see these guys take care of the ball, manage the team, take care of situational football."-Antonio Pierce said via Jori Epstein
Pierce continued by giving an assessment on both Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell:
"Let's be honest. Aidan's your classic quarterback, drop-back quarterback... highly accurate, can throw the ball outside the numbers. Gardner's really set. Does a good job of patrolling, poise, feels things around him, good feeling in the pocket."
All eyes will be on Las Vegas' offense throughout the preseason to see which QB has the upper edge in the competition.
