Raiders reporter names three QBs to keep an eye on with franchise all but certain to move on from Derek Carr in 2023

The Las Vegas Raiders are going to be making a lot of decisions this offseason. The Raiders made the playoffs last season with interim head coach Rich Bisaccia. This season, under new head coach Josh McDaniels, however, the team has had its issues on both offense and defense.

The most recent is at quarterback. Starting quarterback Derek Carr was benched ahead of last week's game against the San Francisco 49ers. This left Jarrett Stidham at starting quarterback. The former New England Patriots quarterback, who was acquired by the Raiders last spring, held his own against a strong 49ers defense. But to no avail, Las Vegas lost another close game.

A busy offseason awaits the @Raiders, with identifying their 2023 quarterback at the top of their to-do list. Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo, should they hit free agency, will undoubtedly be persons of interest. A look at what the plan might look like:

This week, Raiders reporter Vincent Bonsignore, of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, said that there are three good options for the team when it comes to a quarterback for next season. Convincing seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady to join his former offensive coordinator McDaniels could be the first direction the team looks.

"Brady, if he doesn’t retire and hits free agency, will clearly be a person of interest. So will Garoppolo. Both have significant ties to McDaniels, and each satisfies the all-important trust factor with their former coach."

Bonsignore said that another option would be to sign Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Packers, who were once at the bottom of the NFC North, have now revitalized their season and are within reach of a playoff run. But that doesn't negate the fact that they have considered moving on from the quarterback. Could he reunite with former wide receiver Davante Adams?

"Depending on how the Aaron Rodgers situation plays out, he also could be an option."

Bonsignore said that the third option would be to stick with Stidham and allow him to possibly start next season if the team can't sign a veteran quarterback.

"Jarrett Stidham, who played brilliantly in his first career start Sunday, is not necessarily out of the picture. If the Raiders strike out in adding one of the veterans, he could be re-signed to compete for the starting job. He’s also a candidate to back up one of the big-name targets."

Raiders decided that Derek Carr wasn't their QB just weeks into 2022 NFL season

It came as bit of a shock last week when quarterback Derek Carr was benched in favor of backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham. While Carr did lead the league in interceptions with 16, there were just two weeks remaining in the season, the timing seemed odd.

Las Vegas will owe $40 million to Carr if he is still on the roster by February 15, 2023 or was injured this season. To prevent injury, the team essentially benched him. He then decided to step away from the team.

So, it turns out that the Raiders had made up their minds on Derek Carr just weeks into the season.

You have to wonder, if that's the case, what was the nail in the coffin for this marriage then?

Bonsignore also reported that the team decided very early on in the season that they didn't want to keep Carr longterm and didn't want to be obligated to pay him $40 million at the end of this season. So, Las Vegas' coaching staff and front office knew for months that retaining Carr beyond this season wasn't really ever in the cards.
