Rams HC Sean McVay delivers heated response over Ernest Jones trade question

Ahead of completing their 53-man roster, the LA Rams traded linebacker Ernest Jones to the Tennessee Titans before Tuesday's deadline. The Rams received a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for Jones and a 2026 sixth-round pick.

On Wednesday, Rams coach Sean McVay was asked by a local reporter about what McVay apparently said about the move being a football decision made for the best of the team. The reporter then noted that it sounded odd, especially considering Jones' contributions over the past year. A frustrated McVay replied:

"What I said. How do you take what I said? What do you think that means? So, that's what it means: it's best for the football team based on the evaluation of work. Based on short and long-term."

Ernest Jones played three seasons for the Rams, piling up 320 tackles, 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, 12 pass deflections and three interceptions.

Over the past weekend, rumors circulated that the Rams had granted Jones permission to seek a trade. However, Jones clarified in a now-deleted X/Twitter post that he never requested a trade. Meanwhile, McVay confirmed that Jones never approached the team about being traded.

The Tennessee Titans have been active in their efforts to strengthen their defense this offseason. They signed defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, acquired cornerback L'Jarius Sneed from the Kansas City Chiefs on a four-year deal and selected nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat with their second-round pick. The team also signed veteran defensive backs Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs within the last month.

With the acquisition of Ernest Jones from the Rams, he becomes the newest face on their remodeled defense for 2024. The Titans have Jones listed as the starting right inside linebacker, alongside Kenneth Murray Jr.
