Rare Patrick Mahomes rookie Panini card sells for whopping $173,000: Report
Patrick Mahomes is the face of the modern NFL and this notion has solidified once again. A rare trading card featuring the QB from his rookie year 2017 went on the auction market. And to the surprise of nobody, it fetched a huge price.
Kansas City Chiefs selected Mahomes in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Even though the three-time Super Bowl winner was not the starter in his rookie year, he did take the field in one game. Mahomes started the game against the Denver Broncos in the Week 17 matchup. This Panini card features a jersey patch from the game as well.
The card is rated a 9 for its mint condition and a perfect 10 for the autograph of Patrick Mahomes on it. This is a rare piece of memorabilia, since only 10 of such cards are in existence, and the auctioning company’s CEO Ken Goldin told TMZ:
“Mahomes is one of those players that only comes around every decade or so,” Goldin added. “He's on track to pass Tom Brady's seemingly untouchable Super Bowl record and that has really impacted the interest of his cards from both new and longtime collectors.”
However, the buyer of this rare trading card has not been disclosed. The expectations are that as Patrick Mahomes rakes in the silverware on the field, this auctioned card will also gain value.
Patrick Mahomes is winning at the card game
Even though this latest trading card of Patrick Mahomes sold for a mind-blowing value, it doesn’t even come close to the highest-fetching trading card out there. In 2021, another rookie card of Mahomes’ fetched $4.3 million in an auction, overtaking the previous most expensive at $3.1 million of Tom Brady's Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket card.
As per Vaulted Collection, the top 10 of the most expensive trading cards ever auctioned, five spots are taken by Mahomes. While Brady occupies only two spots. Interestingly, this sale of the trading card at $173,000 doesn’t even break the top 10 barrier for the most expensive cards.
