"Reputation ruined" - Georgia Bulldogs QB Stetson Bennett accuses police for ruining his reputation ahead of NFL Draft
On January 28, 2023, Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett was arrested in Dallas, Texas, for public intoxication. Bennett was reportedly banging on the doors of homes in a residential neighborhood before police detained him.
There were multiple complaints of him going around banging on doors, and the police deemed him intoxicated upon his detainment.
In an arrest video obtained by TMZ Sports, Bennett was heard on video accusing police of ruining his reputation.
Bennett said from the back of the cop car:
“The door shut and somebody fell asleep. And now five million people gotta see it, don’t they? Thank you boys for looking out for me. You guys are the best. Reputation ruined. Everything I worked for for 20 years, ruined. But y’all boys just looking out for me, aren’t ya? Thank you, sir.”
Perhaps Bennett thought he would be getting in more trouble than what he got himself into. He's still expected to be drafted later this month.
Stetson Bennett draft projection: When will the two-time national champion get drafted?
Despite Stetson Bennett winning two National Championships with the Georgia Bulldogs in college and being named a Heisman finalist last season, he's not regarded as a top quarterback prospect and isn't expected to go in the first few rounds.
Bennett lacks the ideal size for a quarterback in the NFL. He's listed as 5'11 inches and weighs just 190 lbs. Size isn't a particularly big issue, as Bryce Young is similar in size to Bennett but is expected to be a top-two pick.
Bennett is also old for a rookie. He's 25 years old and will turn 26 in October, which isn't the ideal age for a rookie quarterback. He's older than Lamar Jackson, who has already played five seasons in the NFL.
Bennett also lacks arm strength and fitting the ball into tight windows.
He shows poise on the field as he piled up a 29-3 record while throwing for 8,429 yards, 66 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions.
Bennett is expected to be a mid-to-late-round draft pick. It doesn't seem like his arrest in January will affect his draft stock, and it's anybody's guess as to what round he will be selected. He'll likely be fighting for a roster spot in training camp and is expected to be a backup quarterback in the NFL.
