Richard Sherman puts NFL officials on blast after Super Bowl controversy - “Just hate it”
Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles in on Sunday was thrilling. Both teams gave it their all and provided one of the finest Super Bowl games in history.
However, fans were irritated by a controversial call by NFL officials late in the fourth quarter, which had a significant impact on the game's outcome. Eagles cornerback James Bradberry was called for a hold while attempting to prevent JuJu Smith-Schuster from catching the ball. That penalty allowed the Chiefs to run out the clock,
Former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman was not happy about it. He believes that such calls should be avoided in a game of such high magnitude.
Here's what Richard Sherman said on his podcast about the controversial holding call on James Bradberry in the Super Bowl:
"I just hate it man because we deserve to see, just like last year with the AFC Championship Game between Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, you deserve to see Josh Allen go down the field and try and make an attempt at this game. You deserve to see Jalen Hurts make an attempt, we deserve that."
Sherman added:
"That wasn't egregious, we didn't see the jersey separate. He overthrew him. Next play they made the stop. If you could, you could call holding on every offensive lineman almost on every play of a game."
He continued:
"You don't because you let them play, you could call a holding on pretty much the DBs every play, you don't, you let them play in the Super Bowl. In that moment you cannot do that. You cannot call that and there's not going to be any accountability. That's the frustrating part. There's not going to be any accountability."
Although James Bradberry himself admitted that he did hold Smith-Schuster and was rightly penelized, many believe that these types of calls are usually not given considering the context of the game.
After the controversial call, many people claimed that the Philadelphia Eagles were robbed of a chance to at least try and tie the game, if not win it outright. It further puts pressure on NFL officials who have been criticized throughout the season.
Super Bowl LVII: Jalen Hurts had a sensational performance in a losing cause
Despite the Philadelphia Eagles' loss against the Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Jalen Hurts produced an outstanding effort. Hurts perhaps played the best game of his NFL career, but his defense was unable to stop Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.
The Eagles quarterback finished the game with 304 yards and a touchdown while completing 71.1% of his passes. He also rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries and scored three times. If the Eagles had won, he would have easily received the Super Bowl MVP title.
Jalen Hurts is likely to sign a new contract soon that would pay him more than $50 million per year, and the Eagles quarterback deserves it all. The team is in for a busy offseason, and it will be interesting to see how General Manager Howie Roseman handles it.
