Rob Gronkowski admits Patrick Mahomes will give Tom Brady a 'run for his money'

Patrick Mahomes etched his name into the NFL record books once again when his Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP for the second time in his career, becoming only the sixth player ever to win the award multiple times.

Making this accomplishment even more impressive is that Mahomes has only been a starting quarterback for five years. This has sparked a conversation around the NFL that he could one day surpass Tom Brady as the greatest quarterback of all time.

Brady's close friend and former teammate Rob Gronkowski recently appeared on an episode of the Up & Adams show to share his personal take on the situation.

"Yeah, he definitely can give Brady a run for his money. I mean, he's young. He has two Super Bowl wins now. He's been to the Super Bowl three times over the last four years. But in order to get to that level, I mean, you're gonna have to be consistent for the next 15 years."
Can @PatrickMahomes give @TomBrady a run for his money?

@RobGronkowski: yes… but in order to get to that level you’re going to have to be consistent for the next 15 years.

If Mahomes ever wants to surpass Brady as the greatest quarterback in NFL history, he still has a long way to go. As pointed out by Gronkowski, he will need to pair elite consistency with impressive longevity to get there. Mahomes is off to a good start in that regard, as his first five years as a starter are comparable to Brady's.

Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady each dominated the NFL during the first five years of their careers

Tom Brady won three NFL MVP awards during his career but didn't receive his first one until his seventh season as a starting quarterback with the New England Patriots. Patrick Mahomes far surpasses him in this category, having won two NFL MVP awards in just his first five years as a starter for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes recently earned his second Super Bowl ring in three appearances across his first five years. Brady was more accomplished in this area during the first five years of his own career. He made three Super Bowl appearances in his first four years and won all three of them.

While the early part of Patrick Mahomes' career is comparable to Tom Brady's, he will need to keep things rolling if he's ever going to catch the former Patriot. He still needs to accumulate another NFL MVP award, five more rings, and three additional Super Bowl MVP awards to even the score.
