Robert Griffin III’s wife Grete issues message after ESPN fires ex-NFL QB

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III was abruptly fired on Thursday afternoon by ESPN. The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback had two more years left on his contract with the network when the decision was made.

On Thursday evening, Griffin, who tends to make lighthearted gestures on social media, posted a clip from the movie "Friday" on X. The clip was about someone getting fired on their day off, which happened to him.

His wife Grete replied to his post with her sentiments. She encouraged Griffin to move on to 'bigger' and 'better' things in the future.

"Onto bigger and better things."

The Baylor standout also shared his own inspiring words in another X post on Friday morning.

"When one door closes, another one opens. Trust God on your journey."

Griffin wasn't the only member of the ESPN on-air staff that was dismissed, as Sam Ponder, who was the host of "NFL Countdown" on Sunday mornings, was also relieved of her position on the same day.

Why did ESPN fire Robert Griffin III?

NFL and college football fans were shocked by the news that Robert Griffin III won't be part of the coverage this upcoming season. This led to many questions about what could have led ESPN to part ways with him.

According to The Athletic's Andrew Marchand, the network was looking to cut costs, and Griffin and Ponder's departures were seen as two ways to do so. Griffin already lost his role on "Monday Night Countdown," the Monday Night Football pre-game show, as the network hired former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce this offseason to take over his spot.

At this point, Griffin's departure doesn't appear to be anything other than a cost-cutting measure for the sports network. A similar occurrence happened last summer as well when ESPN fired other notable personalities like Todd McShay, Steve Young, and Suzy Kolber.
