"I feel revived in every way": Russell Wilson confident after Steelers minicamp day 1
Even though Russell Wilson is 35 and is entering the 13th season of his NFL career with his third team, he feels 'rejuvenated' heading into the 2024 season.
After the Seattle Seahawks traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos before the 2022 season, Wilson lasted just two seasons with them. He was released this off-season and the two had a messy breakup.
Wilson signed a one-year veteran minimum contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers with a good chance of becoming their starting quarterback. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, after the team's first mandatory minicamp practice, Wilson talked about feeling rejuvenated.
"Man, I feel the fountain of youth. I feel revived in every way, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. I feel confident. I think at some point you have to know who you are as a player, as a man, as a competitor. As somebody who's been fortunate to be able to play this game, I don't doubt it. I trust it. I felt really good last year playing. I felt really confident in the midst of everything. And so, I think right now I have all that confidence times 10."
The Steelers got rid of quarterbacks Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitch Trubisky this off-season. They signed Wilson and acquired Justin Fields via trade with the Chicago Bears.
Russell Wilson seems to be Pittsburgh's starting quarterback with Justin Fields as the backup
Will it be Russell Wilson or Justin Fields who start for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 of the 2024 season? All signs currently point to Wilson being the current starter.
On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said Wilson is still in the "pole positon" to win the starting job for the Steelers.
Nothing is official or set in stone yet, as the team is yet to declare a starter for the 2024 season.
Both Wilson and Fields are similar in skill level at the current stage of their respective careers, with Wilson being the much more experienced quarterback.
Wilson will be entering his 13th season, has been named to nine Pro Bowls, is a Super Bowl winner, and has played in 18 playoff games. Fields has been a starter for the Bears for three seasons, and has emerged as a good dual-threat quarterback in recent years despite the lack of success the team had.
It makes sense that the Steelers would be more confident with Russell Wilson, who is the more experienced and better leader of a team.
Who do you think will start in Week 1 for the Steelers?
