Saints star Derek Carr admits to being 'shocked' after winning Week 17 NFLPA Community MVP

On Friday, New Orleans Saints star Derek Carr was named the NFLPA Community MVP for Week 17. The quarterback received the prestige after he and his wife Heather donated holiday meals and Christmas gifts to nine local families. Apart from the gifts, Carr also donated $5000 to each of the nine families.

Derek Carr was later interviewed by NFLPA, during which the quarterback shared his reaction to winning the MVP award. Carr revealed being "shocked" after he found out about the good news. Sharing his reaction to the award, the Saints quarterback said:

"I was shocked when I found out about my nomination for this award. While certainly honored, the reason Heather and I did this was the realization of being able to help people in need, especially during the holidays. I was just doing what I felt the Lord wants us to do in these situations, with what He has provided for us."

After winning the MVP, Derek Carr will now pick a charity of his choice to which the NFLPA will make a donation worth $10,000. In return, the quarterback will accompany the NFLPA to a local community center, children's hospital, or a local school, to spend time with his fans.

Raiders HC talked about facing Derek Carr in Week 17 clash vs Saints

Before joining the Saints, Derek Carr played for the Raiders. The Week 17 clash is the first time that the quarterback would get to perform against his previous team. However, with his left hand injury, the possibility of Carr playing against the Raiders appears slim.

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce was asked about the same during a media conference on Friday. Talking about the possibility of facing his former quarterback in the upcoming Week 17 clash, Pierce said:

"My memories of Derek are seeing him as a teenager, as a young man with [the Giants] during our Super Bowl run when I played with his brother. I’ve known Derek for a long time, known that family for a long time. Lot of respect for Derek as a pro, as a man and as a person. Wish him all the best and if we see him, that’s even better."

Both the Raiders and Saints have been eliminated from the playoffs but despite that fans are looking forward to their Week 17 clash.
