Sean Payton looks to lure key Patriots coach to Broncos

Sean Payton took his turn in front of the media at the NFL Combine on Tuesday morning in Indianapolis. The newly hired Denver Broncos head coach talked about assembling his coaching staff and even mentioned Matt Patricia, who had interviewed with the team for the defensive coordinator position.

The Broncos hired Vance Joseph last week to be the defensive coordinator, but he said that Patricia's interview with the team was 'outstanding'. He also went on to say that he wouldn't rule out hiring Patricia in another capacity on the coaching staff. The Denver Broncos are the only team that interviewed Patricia for a coordinator position.

Sean Payton did go on to say that he would have to sit down with Vance Joseph and get his take on what type of position Matt Patricia would get if he did hire him. Matt Patricia worked under Bill Belichick for most of his career, rising to defensive coordinator in the Patriots' coaching ranks.

He then went on to take the head coach job of the Detroit Lions, which didn't go as planned and after three seasons he was let go. He returned to the Patriots as an assistant coach and called plays on the offense last season.

Sean Payton talks hiring former Giants QB for Broncos staff

While speaking of his recent coaching staff hires, Sean Payton also spoke about hiring former New York Giants quarterback Davis Webb as the Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach.

This was not the first time that Webb had been offered a coaching position, the Buffalo Bills offered him the job last season but he decided to keep playing. The 28-year-old made his first career start in 2022, playing in the regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants lost the game 22-16 but Webb went 23 of 40 in completed passes for just 168 yards and one touchdown.

The new Broncos head coach said that New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Eli Manning both gave great recommendations of Webb which led to his hiring.

He will now be tasked with the job of helping quarterback Russell Wilson come out of the slump that brought so much attention to the quarterback last season.
