Shannon Sharpe says Packers made $150M mess
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has emerged from his darkness retreat and now the entire NFL world is waiting on his decision. Will he retire or won't he?
Having flirted with the idea of retirement before, the Packers never really know which way the quarterback is leaning. However, they still gave him a three-year, $150 million deal last offseason.
Fox Sports Undisputed's Shannon Sharpe stated on the show that the Packers gave Rodgers all that money without a backup plan.
Sharpe said:
"Skip, what the Packers have done is sign Aaron Rodgers without a prenup, so now they at his mercy. So now, Skip, you're stuck with him. He can threaten to retire, veto and now you stuck becuase you got that huge bonus, you got that dead money on your cap."
Whether Rodgers plays or not in 2023, he has $59 million guaranteed to be owed to him. He has a dead cap hit of $99 million, so for all intents and purposes, Green Bay is stuck with him, unless he chooses to retire and do away with the contract.
What will Aaron Rodgers do with the Packers?
As Sharpe stated, Green Bay is essentially stuck and is at the mercy of Rodgers and what he wants to do. This has been the reported way for the last few seasons as many have suggested that the quarterback has held Green Bay hostage.
The franchise had a chance to part ways last offseason as many thought it was the perfect time to go their own way. Instead, they signed him to a new deal and now look to be in trouble, even after his darkness retreat.
The organization didn't think they would have the season they did last year as the playoffs were missed. Now, with an aging quarterback and a young Jordan Love waiting in the wings, Green Bay needs to find out what it has in Love as its quarterback.
Moving Rodgers looks to be a herculean task as such is his salary that not many teams would want to take it all on.
For now, we are waiting for Rodgers' career decision as the Cheeseheads are well and truly handcuffed at the moment.
