Skip Bayless rips Baker Mayfield for pointing the finger at Tom Brady 'stressing out' Bucs
Skip Bayless didn't take Baker Mayfield's comments about Tom Brady very kindly. The veteran analyst strongly disapproved of Mayfield's remarks regarding Brady's type of leadership during his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won Super Bowl LV after beating the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs.
Bayless took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Mayfield, reminding him that Brady is the reason why many of his teammates can call themselves Super Bowl champions.
"I've defended Baker for maturing, saying all the right things. But now on a podcast he says Brady kept the team on edge, stressed, purposely threw balls away on plays he didn't want called. I'm sure much truth there but Baker: A BUNCH OF YOUR TEAMMATES HAVE RINGS BECAUSE OF BRADY," Bayless posted on X on Saturday.
This post was a response to Baker Mayfield's comments on the "Casa de Klub" podcast, where he stated that his personality is different from Brady's. He went on to say that some players feel a sense of relief now that they don't have to be around Brady's competitiveness anymore.
“The building was a little bit different with Tom in there," Mayfield said (per Yahoo Sports). "Obviously, playing-wise, Tom is different. He had everybody dialed in, high-strung environment, so I think everybody was pretty stressed out,” Mayfield said. “They wanted me to come in, be myself, bring the joy back to football for guys who weren’t having as much fun.”
These comments didn't sit well with plenty of people, including Bayless, a known defender of Mayfield but a huge admirer of TB12.
Brady led the Bucs to the promised land in his first year with the Bucs, making them the first team to win the Super Bowl in their own stadium and shutting down the dangerous Chiefs in a masterclass from Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles.
Tom Brady lauded Baker Mayfield after impressive Week 1 performance
After a terrific start to the season with a clear win against the Washington Commanders, Baker Mayfield drew high praise, with Tom Brady picking him as the best quarterback in Week 1 of the 2024 season over Josh Allen, who dominated the Arizona Cardinals with two rushing touchdowns.
"Down in Tampa Bay, Baker Mayfield threw four touchdowns, two to my boy Mike Evans, one to Chris Godwin. What a performance," Brady said in the aftermath of that game.
Brady is yet to respond to Mayfield's comments, but Bayless made sure to let Bucs' QB, who was the person responsible for that Super Bowl LV win.
