Steelers insider lobs accusation against Justin Fields' agent over reports of QB competition
Justin Fields has had a roller coaster off-season. After his shocking trade to the Steelers, despite Russell Wilson being their quarterback, there have been reports of competition for the starter job between the duo. However, one insider claims it is due to Fields’ agent.
The Pittsburgh Steelers view their acquisition of Fields as a long-term replacement for Russell Wilson. Yet, since his move from the Chicago Bears, Fields has been linked to being in running for the QB1 position.
Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo has shared his theory on the reasons for such reports emerging from time to time.
Fittipaldo appeared on The Joe Starkey Show on 93.7 The Fan earlier this week. The insider then aired his theory on the entire issue of competition between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.
“A lot of it has to do with agents and what they feed to the national reporters. I think Justin Fields’ agent led people to believe that Justin is in this and that he’s still a viable quarterback on the open market.”
Fittipaldo further went on to state that irrespective of Fields' future spot in the season, he doesn’t mind the behavior of Fields' agent.
“Whatever happens this year, whether he’s sitting on the bench all season, I think his agent wants to keep his name hot.
“It’s only natural for your rep to do this. Part of this is on the Steelers too, right? Because [Wilson and Fields] are both only signed to one-year contracts.”
With Wilson firmly in the pole position to be the starter, Justin Fields will have an opportunity to absorb from the Super Bowl winner this season.
Will Justin Fields become the kick returner for the Steelers?
This season, the NFL will implement new kickoff rules. As such, during the minicamp, the idea was floated that Justin Fields could end up being the kick returner for the team. However, the QB shut that idea down soon.
"Nah, I think everybody kind of interpreted it wrong," said Fields to Post-Gazette. "Coach Danny was basically just trying to send a message that no matter who you are, you could be on special teams. He just used that as an example.”
The last chance for Justin Fields to put his name in contention once more will be during the mandatory training camp. The Steelers will begin their camp on July 25 till August 14.
