Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger explains endorsement of Justin Fields as Week 3 starter over Russell Wilson
As Russell Wilson knows, Ben Roethlisberger was the last franchise quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. As such, his opinion carries more weight than most. Speaking on the Sept. 16 episode of the "Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger" podcast, the former Steelers quarterback endorsed Justin Fields to retain the job for the foreseeable future.
“It wasn’t flashy, wasn’t special. But they did what they were supposed to do which is not turn the ball over and ride the wave of that defense ... They’re 2-0. Big test this week with the Chargers coming to town. To me, if Russ is healthy, I’m sticking with Justin,” Roethlisberger said.
The Steelers have defeated the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos to kick off their 2024 season. Their win over Kirk Cousins and the Falcons was widely considered an upset.
In Week 2, their defeat of the Denver Broncos without Wilson gave both fanbases plenty to talk about. Now, as Wilson appears to be only getting closer to 100%, the Steelers are facing the question of whether to ride the hot hand.
Russell Wilson injury update: Will Steelers QB be fit for Week 3?
At the time of writing, Fields appears to be in the driver's seat for the starting job. Wilson's injury has placed him in the passenger seat, waiting for his calf to heal while Fields drives the team. However, will he be ready for Week 3?
According to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin via The Sporting News and NFL media, his availability was a "big if" for Week 2. As such, his availability appears to be a smaller "if" heading into Week 3. Tomlin has also told reporters that speculation is "a waste of time."
As a result, the coach appears to be holding his cards close to his chest on Wilson as the team gets ready to face the 2-0 Los Angeles Chargers in what could be their toughest challenge yet.
Wilson's last sighting was in the team's third preseason game against the Detroit Lions. In the contest, Wilson completed two of two pass attempts for 26 yards. He appeared to play conservatively in the contest, taking sacks instead of forcing the ball.
The sighting teases a similar playstyle in 2024, should he get back on the field in relief of Fields. Will it result in a winning performance if Tomlin pulls the trigger?
