Stefon Diggs makes feelings known on Texans future with $22,520,000 contract set to run out
The Houston Texans are on a roll even if the offense leaves a lot to be desired. This time last year, CJ Stroud and Co. were on every NFL team's radar, with everyone on offense signing from the same hymn sheet. After taking hold of the AFC South last year, they made some big moves, trading for Stefon Diggs and signing Danielle Hunter in free agency.
The move to trade for Diggs took many by surprise, but what raised a few eyebrows was how the Texans structured the deal. In April, the Texans restructured the deal, giving Diggs a massive bump on his $8.5 million deal by handing him a one-year contract worth $22.52 million. That means it's Diggs' first contract year in the NFL, offering him an opportunity to become a free agent in 2025.
On the Good Morning Football show this week, Diggs got a bit cryptic about his future with the franchise.
"You know, I don’t know what the future holds, but I definitely have a home in Houston. You know what I’m saying?" Diggs said.
Diggs will be 31 by the time his contract ends next year. He will, however, cost the Texans nearly $4.161 million against the cap in each of the next four seasons despite the restructured deal.
Where Stefon Diggs, Houston Texans stand in Week 16
The Texans can breathe easy, knowing that they have booked a place in the NFL playoff picture for January. With nine wins, they are top of the AFC South for the second year running and are primed to either tie or eclipse their 10-win record from last year.
As things stand, they figure to be the fourth seed in the AFC, behind the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Three spots are still up for grabs in the AFC. The Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers appear primed to take those spots. The Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals also have slim chances, considering the Chargers and Broncos will face off in Week 16.
However, we are unlikely to see Joe Burrow play meaningful football in January despite a Week 15 win over the Tennessee Titans.
