Brock Purdy to beat Tom Brady? Stephen A. Smith believes rookie QB to upstage the GOAT

The 8-4 San Francisco 49ers host the 6-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday at 4:25 PM ET and will feature a Tom Brady-Brock Purdy matchup as many expected.

The backup rookie quarterback will make his first career start this Sunday vs. none other than Tom Brady.

The 49ers have the best overall defense in the league and are currently 3.5 point favorites over the Bucs.

ESPN First Take analyst Stephen A. Smith predicted that Purdy will defeat Brady and the Bucs in his first career start.

Smith Said:

"This didn't, you know, Purdy ain't the one that Tom Brady has to go up against. He got to go up against them boys on the defensive side, led by Bosa. And the crew, that's what he got to go up against. He's got to go up against them with a compromised offensive line. All right, he's got to go up against them. With a less than stellar running game."
"He's got to go up against them with with receivers, he doesn't seem to be on the same page with on far too many occasions this season, whether it's Evans, it's Godwin or anybody else. The San Francisco 49 as defense is no joke. Now I'll be fair and say, I don't think they get at the quarterback the way that Dallas does when it comes to quarterbacks being in passing situations."

Smith added:.

"You can't have Tom Brady dropping back to pass and throw 50 times not against these brothers. And I think that that's a that's a situation that's incredibly daunting for them now to have a base defense on no slouches. And when you take into account the fact that it's Purdy and now you've got a week of film to watch on him, so you might be better prepared for him than Miami was okay, because they didn't expect and anticipate going up against them and until Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt."
"You got a situation where San Fran I'm sorry, Tampa Bay might have a little bit more familiarity with him and what he can do. But you still got debo, you still got George Kittle you still got those cats? Of course Christian McCaffrey will call Shanahan call the plays getting into football out of his hands. So I expect San Francisco to put up some points. Maybe not a boatload of points."

Brock Purdy will get his first career start this Sunday. There isn't a bigger first start for a young quarterback than facing Tom Brady in the first game.

Purdy shone in the first game that he played as a professional. When Jimmy Garoppolo went down with an injury in the Miami Dolphins game last Sunday, Purdy led the 49ers to victory over one of the best teams in the AFC.

Purdy completed 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the win Sunday.

It will be interesting to see how Purdy fares in his first career start, especially against Tom Brady.
