Stephen A. Smith waves red flags for Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes after Week 2 horror vs Bengals
The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a win over the Cincinnati Bengals despite Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce not having standout performances. Stephen A. Smith said on Monday's episode of ESPN's "First Take" that the Chiefs got lucky as they weren't the best team on the field.
Smith highlighted that Kelce has less than 40 yards in the first two games of the season. The longtime ESPN analyst also said that he saw Taylor Swift more than he saw the Chiefs tight end on Sunday afternoon.
"We saw more Taylor Swift than we saw Travis Kelce yesterday on a Sunday afternoon and any other time that's applicable, that ain't supposed to happen yesterday. We're supposed to see more Travis Kelce yesterday than we saw her. That's not happening. You got to get it going bro, you got 39 receiving yards in first two games."
"The Bengals outplayed Kansas City. Kansas City locked up, the pass interference call was the right call, etc, but what I'm thinking about is this, you look at a Travis Kelce, you look at Xavier Worthy, you're talking about three receptions for 22 yards, and they managed to win this game. You're not supposed to win that game when something like that happens, Patrick Mahomes, the Michael Jordan of this sport, got his 17th in QBR over the first two games of this season. He has not been spectacular."-Stephen A. Smith said on "First Take."
The Kansas City Chiefs will now prepare to face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.
Patrick Mahomes guarantees increase in Travis Kelce's production
Travis Kelce has been Patrick Mahomes' top offensive target throughout the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty. The duo have won three Super Bowl titles together and Kelce has always been Patrick Mahomes' asset in clutch moments.
The Chiefs may be 2-0, but Travis Kelce has not recorded big numbers so far. After the win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Patrick Mahomes told reporters that Kelce has been double-teamed by familiar opponents as the Chiefs have played both the Baltimore Ravens and Bengals multiple times in the last few seasons and Kelce is known to be Mahomes' top target.
“Obviously, we’ve played two opponents that we’ve played a lot, so they have a plan on how they’re going to account for Travis. As the season goes on, he’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards. The leader that he is – what’s special is he’s hyping everybody up, he’s keeping everybody motivated, and that’s what you need out of your great players.”-Mahomes said.
Patrick Mahomes then said to reporters that Travis Kelce's opportunities will come throughout the season.
