Steve Young expecting more from 49ers' Brock Purdy amid injuries to Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel

The San Francisco 49ers have been handed two major blows at the start of the season. Not only is wide receiver Christian McCaffrey on the injured reserve, but wide receiver Deebo Samuel is also going to miss a few weeks with a calf injury. The team is 1-1.

With some of their star players missing games, others will have to handle a bigger load on the offense to keep things going. In this case, it's time for Brock Purdy to take even more command of the offense and lead the team. And former quarterback Steve Young, who won a Super Bowl with the 49ers, has the same opinion:

He has to be even more honed on his efficiency to find players that aren't necessarily the top of their game, like Deebo, the top of the game like CMC. And now I've got to figure out how to get the ball to them, have them get open. Inevitably he's going to have to do more. He's going to have to move around more. He's going to have to put himself at risk more, and he's going to have to do things that aren't necessarily his strong suit and that might provide great things in the future when they get to the Super Bowl this year, have to face Patrick Mahomes or face Lamar Jackson.

McCaffrey is going to miss at least the next three games before he can return to the active roster, while Samuel is going to miss "a few weeks" according to Kyle Shanahan, but it's unclear when he'll return.

When will Brock Purdy sign a contract extension with the 49ers?

As part of the 2011 CBA terms which remained for the new 10-year agreement signed in 2020, a team can't sign a drafted player to a contract extension until after three years in the league.

While Brock Purdy will certainly earn a huge amount of money once he signs the paper, neither party can agree to an extension until after the end of this season. It's great news for the 49ers, who can keep their superstar quarterback around for a small amount in the salary cap.
