Texans icon JJ Watt delivers verdict on Houston's "rough patch" after loss to division rivals
The Houston Texans are navigating choppy waters in the 2024 season. During this challenging stretch, JJ Watt's recent comments on the "Pat McAfee Show" offered a glimpse into the team's internal perspective.
Watt, a Texans defensive legend, talked about a critical moment in the team's playoff aspirations. He gave a candid assessment of Houston's situation.
"I think they'll close it out strong," Watt said on Wednesday. "I believe in them. I believe in DeMeco Ryans, what he's doing, and that entire staff and all the players down there. There's no question, it's a rough patch at the moment, just little things."
Houston Press provided context for Watt's concerns. In the Texans' last matchup against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, they lost 32-27. Their record has dramatically shifted from a promising 6-2 to a challenging 1-3. Their playoff odds, while still strong at 89%, have become more precarious.
The Texans have recently experienced a challenging run, going 2-4 in their last six games. C.J. Stroud has thrown more interceptions (5) than touchdowns (4) during this period.
Houston Texans navigating a critical season
JJ Watt highlighted specific challenges facing the team. However, he added that the Texans can still get things right.
"There's some issues with penalties, for sure, some offensive line things," Watt said. "But middle of the season is when you get all that stuff cleaned up and get it corrected."
According to Fox44news, Stroud's performance has been particularly scrutinized. Houston coach DeMeco Ryans addressed these challenges directly and emphasized personal growth and continuous improvement.
"For me, when it comes to the bar being set, who sets the bar for someone? There is no higher bar set for coaches and players than the bars we set for ourselves," Ryans told reporters on Wednesday.
The Houston Texans face a daunting remaining schedule. Upcoming matchups include games against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens. Houston Press noted that the team's "magic number" to clinch the AFC South division is three.
Watt's optimism stands in contrast to growing concerns. The team's offensive line has been described as "an embarrassment" by critical analysts. Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik faces mounting pressure for ineffective play-calling.
Despite these challenges, Watt remains steadfast.
"I believe D'Amico is the right guy to do that," Watt said.
As the playoffs approach, all eyes remain on Houston's potential for a remarkable turnaround.
