Texans name former player DeMeco Ryans as franchise's sixth head coach

Former Houston Texans star DeMeco Ryans has been officially named as the franchise's sixth head coach. Texans CEO Cal McNair and general manager Nick Caserio have reached terms with the former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator to take charge of the franchise for the 2023 NFL season.

Ryans has penned a six-year deal with the franchise, which is now in rebuild mode after losing key pieces on both sides of the field in Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt.

The franchise, which recently parted ways with Lovie Smith, was in search of a new head coach to steer the team back on track after back-to-back disappointing seasons. Ryans was also linked to the Denver Broncos head coaching vacancy, which is now being filled by Sean Payton.

Following Robert Saleh's departure, Ryans did an admirable job as the 49ers' defensive coordinator, turning them into one of the league's most dominant units.
