“The truth will come out in time” – Brett Favre issues defiant statement amid concussion drug scandal
Brett Favre is currently immersed in a scandal involving the state of Mississippi and the redistribution of millions of dollars intended for high-risk families. Although Favre hasn't spoken about the scandal in public, he has stated in the past that he is innocent of any wrongdoing.
On Thursday, the former NFL quarterback posted a video on his official Facebook page thanking his supporters. He stated again, as he has in the past, that the truth will come out in the future and that the media has shed an unfair light on him and the situation.
He once again asserted his innocence and said that the details should have come out already.
“Trust me, the truth will come out in time, but I certainly appreciate your support. I have been unjustly smeared in the media. I have done nothing wrong, and it is past time to set the record straight."
In the brief video, Brett Favre added that the lack of respect being shown to not just him but others in the country is terrible. He thanked his supporters and also thanked military personnel as the country celebrates Veteran's Day.
This comes as more information has been revealed about the Super Bowl champion's involvement in the scandal. This includes his investment in drug companies that have created concussion treatment.
Brett Favre welfare scandal
The welfare scandal was revealed in 2020, when a Mississippi auditor found that over $70 million of welfare funds were directed to other fronts instead of being used to help in-need families.
Brett Favre allegedly received one million for speaking engagements that he never made. He has since paid the money back, but still owes another $200,000 in interest.
He had also asked former Mississippi governor Phil Bryant to use some of the money to fund a volleyball facility at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi. This is where his daughter was playing college volleyball at the time.
Text messages surfaced showing that Favre knew what he was doing was wrong and wanted to make sure that the media didn't find out where the funding originated from.
The FBI has been investigating the scandal and although the former quarterback hasn't been charged, additional allegations have also been released.
Two drug companies that were creating a treatment for concussions that Brett Favre supported were apparently funded with $2 million of the money intended for welfare. The companies also apparently fabricated the results so that they could entice investors to give them additional funding.
With such serious allegations, backed by seemingly strong evidence, it will be an uphill battle for the legendary former quarterback to salvage his reputation.
