"This is as big a risk as you could take": Cowboys billionaire owner Jerry Jones drops shocking take on HC Brian Schottenheimer

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acknowledged the bold nature of his latest coaching hire. He made a candid admission about Brian Schottenheimer's lack of coaching experience which marks a departure from conventional NFL hiring practices.

Jones, the Cowboys' longtime owner and general manager, defended his choice of Schottenheimer to replace Mike McCarthy. Schottenheimer served as Dallas' offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

During his introductory press conference on Monday, Jones addressed reporters about his decision-making process.

"I get my proverbial ass kicked about needing people in my comfort zone," Jones said, via FOX 4's Jeff Kolb. "If you don't think I can operate out of my comfort zone you're so wrong. This is as big a risk as you could take, no head coaching experience."

The Cowboys finished 7-10 this season under McCarthy, missing the playoffs after three straight 12-5 campaigns. Schottenheimer inherits a team featuring Dak Prescott, who signed a record $240 million contract in September, averaging $60 million annually.

Brian Schottenheimer was vocal about himself.

"I'm really good with X's and O's, but I'm great with people," Schottenheimer said.

Schottenheimer brings 25 years of NFL coaching experience, including stints as offensive coordinator with the New York Jets, LA Rams and Seattle Seahawks from 2006 to 2020. He is the 10th coach in Cowboys history, following notable names like Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson.

The new coach outlined his vision for Dallas.

"To our players, you are the core of this program. And we will focus on you every day," Schottenheimer said.

He also stressed building a culture centered on "world-class competitors" and a "relentless work ethic."

Critics questioned whether Jones conducted a thorough coaching search. The team interviewed external candidates including Kellen Moore, Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier. Former Cowboys stars Deion Sanders and Jason Witten were also linked to the position.

However, Jones stands firm behind Schottenheimer, whose father Marty was a legendary NFL coach. The owner banks on Schottenheimer's strong connection with Prescott and player-first approach to lead Dallas back to championship contention.
