Titans DT Jeffery Simmons makes feelings clear on Brian Callahan benching Will Levis
Titans coach Brian Callahan took the difficult decision of benching Will Levis for the remaining three games of the 2024 season. Tennessee (3-11) is the second worst in the AFC South. By starting Mason Rudolph, the team hopes to salvage what it can of the remaining season.
Titans defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons gave his two cents on the situation and said that he supported the coach's decision to bench Levis.
"We all get held to a high standard, and when you're not doing your job, and you're not, I guess, doing at a high level, and they expect you to do it, you know, things happen like that," Jeffrey Simmons told reporters.
However, Callahan emphasized that the decision was limited to the current season, and he still had faith in Will Levis, whom the team had drafted last year, and that he could yet be the team's franchise QB.
"I'm not worried about any long-term discussions at the moment, I'm trying to get this week done and win this week," Callahan said. "Those are all things we can revisit again at a later date. Yeah, I expect Will to be the backup and he is, he's under contract year. I still believe in Will. I still believe he can improve."
Turnovers have been a major problem for the QB as he has 12 interceptions for just 12 touchdowns this season.
Can Rudolph save Christmas for the Titans or will he struggle like Will Levis?
Could Sam Darnold step in to take charge instead of Will Levis?
During his initial six years in the NFL, it didn't look like Sam Darnold would amount to much. But this season, the QB has seen a breakout and has recorded 28 touchdowns and 3,299 yards passing. He and Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell have led the team to a 12-2 record, with three more games left.
However, earlier this year, the team drafted J.J. McCarthy, and after waiting the entire season learning the ropes from the sidelines, it's expected that the team will allow Darnold to walk off into free agency as this is the final year of his contract.
Should that happen, the Titans would be an attractive destination as neither Will Levis nor Mason Rudolph hold much promise, as of now.
