Tom Brady makes feelings perfectly clear on Texans linebacker's illegal hit on Trevor Lawrence
Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady weighed in on the most discussed topic of Week 13, Trevor Lawrence's concussion.
Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair delivered a late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, which left Lawrence concussed. On Tuesday, Al-Shaair was suspended for three games.
On Colin Cowherd's show, The Herd, Brady preached the importance of quarterbacks protecting themselves due to the sport's natural violence:
“Nobody wants to see anybody get hurt but it is also the reality of a very physical sport that we play. Defensive players have to be aggressive. That’s their nature. There’s an aspect where I think the quarterbacks need to take better care of themselves.
"When you run, you put yourself in a lot of danger. When you do that, I don’t think the onus of protecting an offensive quarterback who’s running should be on a defensive player. I don’t think that’s fair to the defense."
The hit drew comparisons to Kiko Alonso's hit on Joe Flacco in 2017. Back then, however, the league did not suspend Alonso, who played for the Miami Dolphins.
Brady played the quarterback position in the NFL with excellence across two decades. One impressive aspect of his resilience was the low number of injuries he had to deal with, except for a torn ACL back in the 2008 season.
Protecting himself was always one of Brady's greatest assets.
Azeez Al-Shaair apologizes to Trevor Lawrence
On Monday, the day after the game, Azeez Al-Shaair apologized to the Jaguars quarterback for the hit, stating that his goal was never to hurt anyone.
"I would never want to see a player hurt because of a hit I put on them, especially one that's deemed late or unnecessary".
Al-Shaair can return to the field during Week 17 in a Christmas game against the Baltimore Ravens.
