Tom Brady reveals 2 things about Brock Purdy that impressed him in first encounter against 49ers QB
Tom Brady and Brock Purdy's stories are remarkably similar. Both were overlooked in the draft and got a chance to become the starting quarterback because of injuries ahead of them. However, whereas the former Patriots great converted that opportunity to a Super Bowl win, the current 49ers star got there but could not get the Lombardi Trophy.
However, Tom Brady believes that Brock Purdy has the full confidence of his teammates after they met on the field during the 2022 season. In what was the Buccaneers quarterback's last year before retirement, he was defeated by the young quarterback in San Francisco.
Recalling that moment, Tom Brady said he was impressed by two qualities in Brock Purdy: his poise and composure. Together, according to the NFL legend, they allowed the 49ers quarterback to project calm in chaotic situations.
Brady said that it allows the San Francisco player to walk into the huddle and have his team listen to him because they know their quarterback will be unfazed. Speaking to Colin Cowherd, the seven-time Super Bowl champion noted,
"I think it's poise and composure. It's calm under chaos. That's what the quarterback needs to do. And he walks into that huddle, needs 10 other guys looking at him and go, 'All right, man, you're totally under control, and whatever you say, we're going to do to our best because we know you're going to deliver.' And they all have that confidence in Brock as a player."
Brock Purdy wants to emulate Tom Brady in his career
Brock Purdy will be happy to receive praise from Tom Brady because the San Francisco quarterback wants to follow in the GOAT's footsteps, especially regarding time management and getting crucial first downs and touchdowns. Earlier in the offseason, Brock Purdy had said,
"With as good of a team that we have, I want to get to that point where we get to the third quarter, there's a couple of drives that are crucial, I'm on top of my stuff, we convert on third downs, and we score touchdowns and the lead just gets out of hand. It's having that Tom Brady kind of feeling. Late in the game, it always felt like Tom was just gonna take over and not make it close. I feel like I can get to that."
That is proving easier said than done, though, as the 49ers sit with a 4-4 record after nine weeks of the 2024 NFL season.
