Tom Brady rookie card: Rare signed card sells for record $2.4 million
Tom Brady remains the most marketable player in the NFL. The seven-time Super Bowl champion still brings in the big bucks from casual and serious fans alike. He remains the most recognized face in the league and that point was reinforced when one of his signed rookie cards sold for $2.4 million.
As always with Brady, most of his achievements are record-breaking. That was the case here too as this is the highest value of any football card in a public auction this year.
The reason this card was so valuable was because it was in near-perfect mint condition and the autograph was also graded perfect. Out of 100 cards produced, 87 have been graded but only a few have been in mint condition and therefore the price has shot up.
Most expensive Tom Brady rookie cards
Tom Brady's rookie card going for high value is nothing new. In fact, the card mentioned above was not even his most valuable rookie card. That honor belongs to another one. Here are the three most expensive cards, ignoring this one.
#1 - 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Auto #144 /100, June 2021 ($3.1 million)
The most expensive Tom Brady rookie card ever went for a whopping $3.1 million and was similar to the one that went for $2.4 million now.
It was a near-perfect mint (9/10) and the autograph was perfect. Only 100 of these cards were ever printed. Since the card mentions the word "Championship" at the top, it became highly desirable. The back lists his University of Michigan stats as a stater. Also, due to its rarity, there are many counterfeit cards for this edition.
#2 - 2000 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket Auto #144, January 2021 ($555,988)
Similar to the above card, this is the second-most expensive Tom Brady card, now excluding the one that went for $2.4 million. This card went for $555,988 and also mentions "Playoff Contenders" as the one above. But its value drops because the word "Championship" does not appear here. Some of these cards are in perfect mint condition and the autograph is genuine.
#3 - 2000 SP Authentic #118 /1250, January 2022 ($95,613)
The third most expensive rookie card went this year for $95,613. This is an authentic premium brand card that drives up its price more than other cards. But its overall value is lower because it does not have an autograph and its print run was to the tune of 1250 cards.
However, the fact that we are talking about a card that fetched nearly $100,000 as the lowest baseline shows the enduring value of Tom Brady.
