Travis Hunter has a special request from Roger Goodell at 2025 NFL Draft
Travis Hunter, one of the most talked-about prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft, has a unique request for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. When his name is called on draft night, Hunter wants it announced with both of his positions - wide receiver and defensive back.
The request came during Colorado's Pro Day, where Hunter spoke to CBS Sports about what he hopes to hear when Goodell steps up to the podium.
“He better say wide receiver and DB. He’s got to,” Hunter said, making his preference clear.
Hunter is widely expected to be a top-five pick in the draft, which takes place from April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The announcement of each selection typically includes the player's name, position, and school.
But Travis Hunter is no ordinary draft pick.
Despite the uncertainty over whether he’ll play both sides of the ball in the NFL, the Colorado star wants recognition for everything he brings to the game. Some teams see him as a lockdown corner, others as an elite wide receiver.
Hunter, however, wants both titles attached to his name, and he's not shy about it.
Travis Hunter didn't take part in defensive drills during Pro Day but ran routes as a receiver, catching passes from teammate Shedeur Sanders. This move came not only to showcase his offensive skill set but also to share one last moment on the field with Sanders.
“It’s probably our last time on the field together, so I had to come out here and do some work with my boy,” he said.
With the entire NFL watching, the Pro Day appearance only added to the growing hype surrounding Hunter.
Travis Hunter on the rise
Few players in college football history have been able to do what Travis Hunter did in 2024. The Colorado standout dominated on both sides of the ball, earning accolades that reflect his all-around brilliance.
As a wide receiver, Hunter hauled in 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. His performance earned him the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's top wideout. On defense, he made 35 tackles, picked off four passes, and deflected 11 others.
These stats are sufficient to earn the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given to college football's best defensive player. Hunter became the second primarily defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy since Charles Woodson in 1997, thanks to his all-around play.
As April 24 approaches, the only real suspense around Hunter may be how many roles he’ll be asked to play and whether Roger Goodell honors his request by announcing both.
Regardless of what the commissioner says, one thing is certain: Travis Hunter is bringing something special to the next level.
