“Man, what a headline” – Jason and Travis Kelce reveal thoughts on Colts’ controversial Jeff Saturday hire

The Indianapolis Colts made a huge move when they fired head coach Frank Reich this week following their loss to the New England Patriots. They hired former center Jeff Saturday as their new interim head coach. NFL superstar brothers Travis and Jason Kelce gave their opinions on the move.

Saturday was an analyst at ESPN and prior to the hire had no experience in coaching. The move, therefore, raised more than a few eyebrows. The Kelce brothers spoke on their 'New Heights' podcast about the news. Travis Kelce gave his thoughts on the matter:

"Colts interim head coach, man what a headline I did not see coming... It's almost like the owner for the Colts walked in to the stadium and was just like 'man, what am I gonna do man?' And looked up at that ring of honor and said, 'Jeff Saturday.' I mean do you wanna talk about charismatic, he seems like he'd be a great leader."

Jason Kelce interjected:

"He's a Colts guy, so you know you're going to get an authentic guy. I've never seen someone hired that already wasn't on the coaching staff to be the interim head coach to finish a season."

His brother agreed, saying:

"Let alone someone getting hired as a NFL head coach that has never had any coaching experience higher than high school."

Jason Kelce went on to say:

"And who is not excited to watch Jeff Saturday, finally call plays? I know one person who's not excited and that's Peyton Manning. I still remember that heated debate: we gotta run the ball there, dammit Jeff, you just run the play that's called, you're not the head coach."

The Philadelphia Eagles center was referring to a now infamous clip from when Peyton Manning and Jeff Saturday played together for the Colts. After an incomplete pass on third down, Saturday could be heard (because Manning was mic'd up) saying:

"We gotta run the ball."

At this, Manning lost his temper and flew into a rage. He and Saturday had a heated and very visible argument on the sidelines. Jason Kelce reminisced on Manning's comments, saying:

"You don't call the plays Jeff."

His brother chipped in helpfully:

"Well now you do Jeff."
Jeff Saturday is gonna call the plays? Cue the Peyton Manning impressions 🤣

It will be very interesting to see how the interim head coach does and if he can change the trajectory of the Indianapolis franchise.

Jeff Saturday has little to no experience as a coach as he went into sports analysis following his 15-year NFL career. He was a member of the Colts from 1999-2011 and was one of the best centers in football at the time. He was named to six Pro Bowls, two second-team All-Pros and two first-team All-Pros. Saturday was a part of the Colts' Super Bowl XLI winning side (February 2007) and is in their ring of honor.

While the hire was surprising due to Saturday's inexperience in coaching, it isn't quite as crazy as it seems. Jeff Saturday is a homegrown guy who has seen a lot of success with Indianapolis and may be the man to inspire their locker room. We will see how he gets on in Week 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
